Some people may consider it affectation but I really cannot help my bilingualism – honestly. Though there is no particular reason like my growing up in an English spoken country or my being raised by English speaking parents in the Netherlands, I find myself often thinking in English and actually prefer reading and writing in English, too. Blame my parents! I have grown up around books, many of which were English. Whenever my parents needed to discuss something not meant for my curious ears, they spoke English. As an only child who the world revolved around, this was unacceptable and of course it became a mission to try and figure out this language so I could understand what they were saying.

My parents turned to the BBC as soon as it became available on Dutch television so I grew up learning to understand their favourite British series without subtitles. By the time I took English in school, I was already fluent.

I know it sounds almost snobbish, but it is true. My only consolation is that I am no longer alone as more people these days are bilingual and my significant other, who is as Dutch as they come, shares the same deviation.

On the other hand I do feel a little guilt towards my mother’s tongue, Dutch, as it is already suffering from neglect so much these days and it is the language my father set out to study. It’s just that sometimes I find it easier to express myself in English, which often requires far fewer words to describe a feeling than Dutch.

Now don’t think I never have to look up a word or a saying – I will be the first to admit I am not that fluent. I use English far too irregularly for that. At least as a secretary I had to actively use the language quite often, handling telephone calls and writing letters. Nowadays I fear I have to resort to my “book English” as I still read almost exclusively in English.

So there it is – the explanation why this blog has an English title and will almost certainly contain English written posts like this. I write down my thoughts as they come to me – sometimes in Dutch, sometimes in English. I apologise if it is too confusing, but then again, this is (also) me…

Wellicht loop ik hopeloos achter – die mogelijkheid bestaat natuurlijk altijd, men kan immers niet alles lezen – maar ik krijg de indruk dat “spammers” een nieuwe manier hebben gevonden om hun boodschap te verkondigen. Ook deze site heeft er al last van gehad: spammers, die zich aanmelden als nieuwe subscribers om boodschappen te plaatsen in de trant van “nice site. check out my site – buy cheap pills!” en meer van precies die bagger die ons ertoe gedwongen heeft spamfilters in onze e-mailprogramma’s in te stellen.

Natuurlijk is het irritant voor een blogger of een online forum als er boodschappen worden geplaatst als “viagra 100mg.! order your meds here! buy without prescription..!!” maar in een online condoleanceregister vind ik het ronduit ongepast en smakeloos. Wat voor mensen gaan er toch schuil achter deze uitingen? En geloven ze nu werkelijk dat ze door dit soort acties meer producten zullen verkopen?

Jammer toch dat er steeds figuren zijn die menen misbruik te mogen maken van anderen en het te moeten verknallen voor de rest. Jammer dat je je – ook in de online wereld – steeds weer wantrouwig moet opstellen. Ik zal wel naïef zijn, maar ik ben van mening dat het niet nodig is. Ik blijf van mening dat het ook anders kan – dat iedereen moet kunnen genieten van een vrij en open medium als het internet, zonder geconfronteerd te worden met allerlei vuiligheid (en dan is dit nog een “milde” vorm, want geloof me, ik ben me er terdege van bewust dat het nog véél erger kan). Ik blijf ervan overtuigd dat een fatsoenlijke, behoorlijke omgang met elkaar mogelijk moet zijn – zowel in de reële als in de virtuele wereld. Ik zal wel te idealistisch zijn.

Echte nieuwe subscribers zijn uiteraard van harte welkom! Sterker nog, ik voel me vereerd dat je het interessant genoeg vindt wat ik te melden heb. Ik ben overtuigd van het belang van kennisdeling en nodig hierbij vakgenoten en geïnteresseerden uit, bij te dragen aan deze site.
Meld je je hier aan, dan ontvang je een e-mail met daarin een wachtwoord, waarmee je in kunt loggen. Vervolgens – maar daar ben je uiteraard helemaal vrij in – heb je de mogelijkheid wat meer over jezelf te vertellen in een profiel en kun je het door het systeem aangemaakte wachtwoord veranderen in een gemakkelijker te onthouden wachtwoord.

Spammers worden bij deze ontmoedigd – meld je aan en je wordt verwijderd. Ik controleer elk e-mailadres en kom er toch wel achter of je vervelende boodschappen als hierboven beschreven achterlaat in blogs en fora. Als dit het geval is, verwijder ik je als subscriber, want je boodschap heeft geen informatiewaarde en niemand zit erop te wachten.
